New to Mas? Here is what to expect

Alright, I am going to try to answer New to Mass's question on what to expect:

Saucy - Can you please give a run down on what to expect on actual Carnival day - like costume pick up, food, drinks, rest periods. Does the band really so all night or do they break off and meet back on Tuesday and until what time.

Costume Pick Up:

This information is usually disclosed about two weeks before Carnival with a notice on the band's website, via email and press advertisements. informing of the costume collection period. Each section is assigned a specific day for pick up and they stress that you can only collect THAT costume on THAT day. However, if you an overseas masquerader you also have one day set aside for those who will be coming to Trinidad the week of Carnival.

On the day of costume pick up you pay off the balance on your costume (if you have not done so before) collect your box/bag with your costume, inspect all the pieces to make sure you have gotten everything advertised especially look for your security bands; one for all-inclusive and one that allows you to be in the band (imprinted with the name of your band). Then you oogle your goody bag (which has lots of useful stuff like nail polish, glitter etc) and if you have any queries look for someone in charge and have your issue addressed. This year TRIBE also gave out a little info booklet with practical information like the line up of the sections, meeting places and times for Monday and Tuesday etc. Most bands will give you a flyer of some sort with this information.

Carnival Monday:
After Jourvert get home and get some rest, make sure and get all the paint/mud off your body. Then start getting ready to go and meet the band, most bands meet between 11:00 am to 12:00 noon at a pre determined venue/assembly point. When you find the band you fall in your section, or the section of your friends, family or significant other that you will be hanging out with for the day. The vibe on Monday is total freedom, as you don't have to worry about looking cute in your fancy costume. If your band is all-inclusive no lunch is served but you do get snacks, and the first thing you should do is take a drink for the road! The band then parades through the streets along a route that takes you through Port of Spain, St. James and to the Savannah where you get 5 minutes of glory to run wild for the camera on stage. Next year's route is uncertain since there are no plans for a Savannah stage. You dance, wine and jump up until sundown, some people go later but by 6:00pm to 7:00pm I usually look to head out of Port of Spain.

Carnival Tuesday:
You will be so excited that you wake up early since the band meets between 7:00 am and 8:00 am. So, you have to get dressed, made up and leave the house as soon as the sun comes up. If you have not had breakfast and are playing in an all-inclusive band, don't worry breakfast is served on the road as soon as you meet the band. If your band is not all-inclusive eat breakfast please! As you get your first look of the band in full costume you start checking out other costumes, admiring the ones that looked so much better on the road and those that did not live up to the photos. Mingle, greet your friends and section mates , the excitment builds as the music pumps you up. Finally you start moving, the band will continue along the same or similar route as Monday, it might be a slower movement since more bands come out on Tuesday. Occasionally you might get stuck behind another band and your band either waits or goes another route. Music will be at full blast of course, the front line H.O.s will be looking pretty and lots of people will be lining the streets to look at you in costume, you will feel like a beauty pageant contestant, all eyes on you!

Your destination is the Savannah stage and everyone wants to get there early. As your quest to enter the Savannah nears you will have to wait, usually in one spot, inching forward until you can actually see the stage and all the spectators. The sun will be beating down on you at this time but you will be too filled with adrenaline and Johnny Walker to care. At that time you will be asked to get in your sections and the drinks trucks will disappear to the side of the band. As you inch towards the stage anticipation grows, you see other masqueraders already on stage having a ball and you cannot wait for your turn, security will be in place keeping sections from running unto the stage before time. The frontline H.O.s will be to the front of the section and security allows them onstage first then they open the man barrier and allow you to charge forward like a banshee from hell. Nothing I write can describe what it is like for those 10 minutes or so of wild frenzied abandonment, you have to experience it yourself.

Too soon security will start gently ushering the maquerders off the stage with some slipping past to go back and join the other section poised to come on stage. Coming down the ramp is like coming down from your high. Faces of strangers will greet you at the end of the ramp, some looking for a friend or family member while others, including the kids, are looking to beg for piece of your costume. As you politely say no and move on you look for the rest of your section and keep moving. At this time the band is ready for a lunch stop (if your band is all-inclusive) and you make your way to a park at St. Clair where lunch stations are set up. This is your only official rest period; you partake of the food, drinks, relax , use the rest rooms, fix your makeup and catch your breath before hitting the road again.

Your legs will feel as if they are rubber after that little rest but you have to press on, ideal time to take a drink for gas as the day is long from over. Your route may take you to other judging points (you are also judged at the Savannah) where you will be required to get into sections again. There is no big stage to cross , you will be jumping up on the street in front of judges and spectators (also you can cross these judging points before getting to the Savannah). A variety of snacks are served in the afternoon, from sno cone to boil corn to ice cream and lollies. As security becomes more lax as the day comes to a close the "stormers" (non costumed civilians) do try and fall in the band. The dancing through the streets continue as the band's route takes you through St. James and as it begins to get dark some people start making their way to where their cars are parked, the traffic to get out of Port of Spain is usually terrible and some try to get out early. The die hard Carnival babies press on until long after it gets dark, I cannot say how late they stay because I am ready to head home by 8:00pm.

And as you leave the band and head towards your car, with no music spurring you on and saturated with alcohol your feet will start to hurt like you never believe, feeling like lead with every step you take all you will be doing is praying to sit down fast! Finally, as you make your way out of Port of Spain and Carnival Tuesday comes to a close, the last strains of Machel's song hits you from a music truck that passes by and you smile, wondering to yourself how long until you can do it all over again!

Girl, a truer word was never spoken. When you have that music truck with you, you feel as if you could chip forever! My hotel is a mere 3 blocks from where the band ends the day, and that short walk feels like MILES without music.

saucydiva said...

new to mas you can wear your costume on both days but most people wear either part of the costume i.e. bra and or belt (no headpiece) or "Monday wear" of shorts and a baby tee.

Saucy, Saucy, Saucy....thanks for that girl!! I really wish it was next week. I have spent half my work day online trying to compose a monday outfit... and i'm getting close people! YAY!! So reading this was the icing on the cake.

But one thing, I know with Tribe, Lunch is both days, its breakfast we only get on Tuesdays. Don't know how it is with any other band.

Carnival 2005 I twisted my ankle the night of Brass Festival (i wasn't there i just remember cause i live close to PSA grounds) and it was big like a bowling ball. First time playin mas, and by Monday it was still painful. People let me tell you, it was only the music that kept me going and I didn't feel a thing until I was walking back to the car, then pain in my A$$!! Monday night soak in epsom salts and back again, by Tuesday night, I could hardly move it from so much pain, but IT WAS SO WORTH IT!!

Warrior what outfit you come up with for Monday?

Girl I have 2 ideas. I found another website: flirtcatalog.com (you guys can check it out)that has the lame shorts in RED!!! YAAAY!!! Which is what I wanted in keeping with the Warrior Spirit colours. However, they also have cute red skirts, which is another option. See I have to be careful since I don't have a whole lotta hips and I have slightly broad shoulders (just keepin it real). So I have to know what works and what doesn't. But the shorts in red would be first preference. The top I want to be white and they have some halters (with tummy visibility). Plus I can iron on "blogger" in red letters on the back if we should decide to go there :)

For my head, I'm going with a cowboy hat and I'm yet to decide if I'm going to use the straw one from last year or get a red one. As for the feet, well I know i'm getting tennis shoes for tuesday but I need something to beat up on monday.

What you think?

Oh and by the way, I forgot to tell you. If you watched Dancing With the Stars on ABC last night, did you notice Vivica used small rhinestones in place of eyeshadow. It was stunning but talk about patience to put those things on!! The results show is on again tonight and they usually are wearing the same thing, so perhaps she might rock those rhinestones again.

I will have to remember to look at it tonight, ANTM is on tonight as well and I like checking out Tyra's new wigs!

I am liking the hot shorts, top and cow boy hat! Red hat will look bettert imo.

I agree, I'm feelin the red cowboy hat!

Hehe, I'll be a cowboy (well, cowgirl) on Monday and an Indian on Tuesday....I love it!!

hi Saucy & crew. My experience the first time was a little different. That wait to get in the savannah took over 4 hours!! We stood on Charlotte Street in the broiling sun for about 2 hours. That was not so bad because the drinks trucks were right there. But then we started advancing into the savannah self: thats when the trucks went away. We spent over 90 minutes in our sections INSIDE the savannah waiting to cross the stage!! The drinks ran out after about 20 minutes and we were parched. I took a rest in the shade behind the stalls for about half an hour and ended up having to buy water from the vendors. By time I could see the stage some of my friends had given up and gone for lunch in St. Clair. I was determined to cross though. I was delirious from the moment my foot touched the ramp. About half an hour later I came off the stage and nearly passed out. I barely made it to the lunch stop where I did collapse in the grass.
The next day I had alternating fevers and chills which the doc summed up as heatstroke. The feeling on the stage was 100% worth it!! but his advice was stay in the shade between midday and 2pm as much as possible. Drink water and gatorade only during those hours. Eat something if possible. Re-start the alcohol drinking after lunch.
I give you this advice because some foreigners and even locals cannot manage the heat as well as the seasoned guys like Saucy. Forewarned is forearmed.
Despite my heatstroke last year I would not miss it again for the world!! See allyuh there!

Hi Warrior...Actually Vivica wore VERY heavy eyeshadow and the stones were used as embellishment. I am positively CERTAIN she utilized Swarovski b/c of the heavy dazzle factor she achieved. They looked fabulous but must be applied in painstaking fashion so that they look great and stay on!
I doh much care for her overall attitude and dancing though...:(

ANTM is a great source for makeup tips as well! ;) Happy TV watching!

secondtimer what band were you with and how far was your section? That is why I like to be upfront (prays fire man is in the first 7)because when yuh behind yuh does have to wait! My friend is from an avid mas player living here and she got heatstroke as well, they key is keeping cool, drinking cool liquids and covering your head.

Saucy...wow! Those words were so sweet and true. You put into words everything that I feel about carnival. You know when you hear that road march, or listen to the lyrics of some soca songs and tears come to your eyes because it's so beautiful? That's how this blog made me feel. I find it's sometimes impossible to describe the actually feeling in your body and heart when you are on the road in the blistering sun with thousands upon thousands of people. Everybody is in harmony and there to have the time of their life (until the next year :) ) and Secondtimer-I felt the same way when i crossed the stage this year. i thought i was seriously going to fall out. People were asking me questions and i couldnt even bother to answer. I just needed to find that lunch truck!

saucy!!! gyurl - TRIBE start dey parades on time (fuh the most part). So allyuh note - when dey say parade start 10am (Carnival monday) and 7am (Carnival Tuesday) - ent no estimating..dey right on de spot...

TRIBE had lunch Carnival Monday and oh gosh...it was real good...I never figured I would be that hungry...we crossed the stage first so that meant we got all of that excitement out of the way LOOONG before the others.

my only gripe: waiting to cross the stage in the blasted boiling SUN wid not one water truck or nuttin...ENT COOL!!! I almost collapse from dehydration...I had to run in de Savannah and jus get one Blue Waters from a stall...

Fuh allyuh dat love the picture ting...the stage is perfect fuh yuh...jus get on baaaddd!!! go in front of the camera and wine u self in a frenzy...oh gosh...I see some gyurls jus lose dey head...it was a sight!!

Prettidolli well I ain't no makeup expert I just saw black diamantes and the woman eye and 'dem were sparkling. The overall effect was fabulous is all I know.

Vivica is a DIVA honey, and I think she out to prove something. A little over dramatic yes, but all that in it. The woman did a cartwheel!!! If you hear noise my body makes when I just try to touch my toes [I'm being so serious....LOL :( ]

Jamette girl luck of the draw. About 3 years ago American Eagle was giving away iron on letters if you spend $50 or more in the store. I didn't too like the red but it was that or yellow and I really wasn't feelin the yellow, so I picked red. I never throw anything away so I still have them, and they going to come in handy. If we don't all decide on a theme I'm putting "WARRIOR" on my back. What yuh say??!!

Brava saucy! Well said.
I still not looking forward to the baking and boiling in the sun to wait to get on the stage though. It was the worst part of this year, yet here I am....

LMAO!!! Anon 7:11pm

You ain't lying. Two of my college girlfriends came to visit me for the first time in May. So as I was helping them with their budgets for the week, I reminded them to save $100 for departure tax. Well they wanted to know what it was and I had to explain. They started up: We gotta pay to leave??!! What kinda mess is that?? What they going to do if I ain't got it? Keep me here? Ok...you had to be there, it was funny though.

So yes, the departure tax thing is serious, don't be spending all your extra TT$ in the gift shop cause you'll be S.O.L. when you get to security.

That Monday kit business is a serious thing. I used to wear the bra top and a matching hot pants (the waistband get leave out years ago). Last year you would not even know I was playing were it not for the ID band. I had on a wife beater and a matching hot pants. That A/F costume had too much cloth on the top and I did not want to spoil it. I have something real hot in mind for next year (assuming it comes out the way I want it) so we go see what transpire. What about the gymbolassies around town? lol see my blog.

It would be remiss of me not to give you kudos on the outstanding job you're doing with this blog. As a "remote" trini (to borrow Island People's expression) trying to make the annual pilgrimage to the Carnival Mecca of the world, I have come to rely solely on your blog to keep me abreast of things.
Whenever I think of cheating on my diet, I just read your blog full of vim and verve and all things carnival and I am cured of my temporary insanity!!

Thanks Ever So Much Saucy!!
