Dressing for Feteing

I can only imagine how stressful it must be to pack for Trinidad Carnival, especially for the women, when you are limited by the weight of your suitcase and a multitude of events to attend. There are so many fetes to go to, plus you need to walk with Carnival accessories, gifts for friends and family that you probably wonder how you can pack everything and what items you can getaway with leaving behind.

Well, here is a simple guide to what type and items of clothing you will need for certain events, and then you can pack accordingly:

All-inclusive fetes:
Plan on dressing up more than you would to go to any other parties in Trinidad as these fetes are usually a “fashion show” with some people dressed to thrill. With premium drinks and a variety of dishes included in the ticket price, all-inclusive are where you go to mingle with the local celebrities, politicians and the who’s who of Trinidad social circles.

Daytime all-inclusive fetes like Beach House and Salybia require stylish yet simple attire and a cute pair of shades. Bermuda shorts, skirts, tunic tops or even a “summer dress” are all quite acceptable wear. Footwear should be comfortable; wedges, flats or nice sandals are perfect, please leave the sneakers at home!

All-inclusive fetes held at night usually bring out the sexy and the stilettos. Expect to see women in daring sexy tops showing off cleavage or back, short skirts emphasizing the legs in high heels, hipster fitted pants showing off the curves and stomach in addition to being adorned with lots of trendy accessories. Rule of thumb is the more expensive the fete, the more dressed up the women are. Furthermore, you see all the latest trends, so if you are not wearing something new you will not be in style. If you need to shop for one new outfit before heading to Trinidad, plan on something you can wear to an all-inclusive fete like Brian Lara’s or Moka.

Soca Jams:
These are large affairs with thousands of people, several live brass bands usually held in some large open space such as a car park for Customs or sports ground like the Brass Festival. Two things are most important when dressing for these fetes, comfort and comfort. This is the time to wear your shorts, jeans and sneakers, with that many people you want to safe guard your toes as well as be able to jump and wave all night to the soca bands.

The only accessories you need are a flag, rag or bandana to wave on instruction and someplace safe to stash your money. Unlike the exclusive all-inclusive, these fetes tend to attract a cross section of society, with many exuberant young boys who might get into fights or try to pick your pocket.

Theme Fetes:
Any party where you are instructed to wear white, black or a crazy hat is considered a “theme party”. Knowing which one you plan on going to in advance helps with the wardrobe. Eyes Wide shut is where you wear all black and a mask. Glo you don all white and Mad Hatters requires you wear some type of headgear. Now, you don’t have to follow the “rules” and can wear anything you desire but the majority of people do follow the dress code, even in part, so unless you want to stand out prepare your outfit accordingly in advance.

Breakfast Parties:
Starting at mid-night and going until the sun comes up, these parties like Insomnia and Dawn test your endurance and fashion sense. What might look good in the night does not look as cute when daylight hits! Here is a tip, walk with sun glasses for when the sun rises; some faces show the stress of the night before more than others, the sun glasses hides the “morning face”. Make sure and “day approve” your outfit, anything worn or faded might look great at night but show all the sins in the light of day.

Another bit of advice for ladies is to take along some blotting sheets, lipstick, eye liner, wet wipes and body spray in your handbag. As the sun rises you can discreetly go to the wash room and “freshen” up. Lots of these breakfast parties also supply you with toothpaste packs, use them!

Clubs:
Zen and 51 degrees have a dress code; if you are going to either one know that men are not allowed in with sneakers and they tend to dress on the metro side, expect to see guys in man blouses and women dressing like Paris Hilton. From my experience people tend to dress very trendy to go to these clubs, lots of “what’s wearing now”. To get an idea of how people dress, just browse the galleries at triniscene.com

Out Door Fetes:
Any party held at Anchorage, Mobs 2, Pier 1, and other open air venues such as Bacchanal Wednesday, Girl Power or Trini Posse are defined as such. These parties are somewhat like the Soca Jam in that they attract a lot of people, might have more than one live band, but they do not attract the same element. Soca Jams tend to attract a more “rough crowd”, for want of a better word, whereas these out door clubs attract a wider cross section; middle to upper middle class, foreigners a sprinkling of local celebrities as well as the popular party crowd. The dress code is usually stylish jeans, pants or shorts coupled with a sexy top and comfortable yet stylish shoes (sandals, wedges, trendy sneakers). You do want to be comfortable to wine and jam, jump up and get on bad, but you don’t want to look like a hot, sweaty mess doing so either.

Panorama Semis
If you are lucky enough to be in Trinidad for Panorama Semis know that most people in the North Stand will be decked out in a "crew" T-Shirt/Vest/Baby Tee. Club Coconuts, Island People, Red Ants,Insmoniacs, Jamboree among many other promoters offer Panorama Packages for around $150.00TT which include one of the aforementioned garments to wear, food and drinks ALL day and a fun lime with rhythim section and alot of other drunk people (cost of your panorama ticket is not included however). This year one of my friends got other accesories in her panorama package including a cup, whistle and "female urinal" (I kid you not!).

It is not necessary to join a crew to enjoy panorama, we usually do our own lime walking with our drinks, food etc. BUT we do wear a uniformed T-Shirt. I come up with the design each year, and iron on the pattern on the T-Shirts/Vests/Baby Tees which is cheap yet effective. The other standard panorama wear is shorts, t-shirt/vest, sun glasses and sneakers! You do not want to be in heels navigating the North Stand stairs!

After Carnival Cool Down:
Whether you are heading to Tobago, Maracas or Manazanilla most likely you will end up on a beach so swimwear is the clothing of choice. I advise on wearing a cover-up when you are not taking a swim since candid camera men are notorious for stalking women in bikinis and next thing you know you are unwittingly starring in some post carnival video.Shorts, Capris, sheer draw string pants or even a wrap is an ideal accessory on the beach.

I plan on listing all the fetes for the Carnival season when the schedule becomes available, but for now here are some of the more popular ones:

I can't come back with more than one suitcase so girl, PRESSUH! Is a good thing I doh wear plenty clothes but the thing is, when I travel, I usually carry only a few items that can mix and match. But I kyah do that back home cuz everybody go remember! "She leave quite foreign to come back here and recycle she clothes!" Yuh know how Trini mauvais langue. I doesn't study people but girl! Anyway, I go let yuh know how ah make out. And ah not leaving NO shoes behind!!!!!!

I have enough experience with packing for vacation and wanting to carry everything so I know how it must be for Carnival and Hottie I normally mix amd match on vacation too but not im Trini, unless you plan on wearing something to again house party!

Shoes is always the most diffcult to pack, is like you want a different shoe for each outfit.:S

Looking forward to the dates and prices for the fetes so I can get my budget sorted.

This year I was down from Carnival Thursday and went to Tribe's Thursday night fete....cahn remember de name....Cooler Party on Friday in Pier 1, Panorama & Dawn pun Satdee/Sundee.....Red Ants fuh Jouvert.

Me and my girlfriend looking to come down for Amnesia next year....lotta my Trini friends have been raving bout this fete...so I want to check it out.

saucydiva said...

Oh Amnesia is usually GREAT, this year however I was disapponted in the food offerings plus it was pricey at $450.00TT so I was expecting more for my money. The two good things were Machel's performance and that I drank Johnny Walker green ALL NIGHT!!I am skipping Amnesia next year and going to TRIBE's all inclusive Bliss, just to see what that is like as I heard it was pretty good this year.

BLISS was BLISSFUL!! Can't wait for next year! I'm hoping they come better than last year.

Next year I definitely want to go to the Breakfast Party in the Vale, but getting a ticket I heard can be problematic and me nah know nobody. Hopefully someone will help me out. Oh and Bishops too, besides the fact its meh alma mater, I hear its a good one.

As for the outfit scene.....is always a pressure, cause as Hottie quite rightly pointed out Trini people mauvais langue and very unforgiving if you not steppin' right.

I couldnt help it, I went on a shopping spree this weekend, every store I went into I was thinking of all the fetes I plan on attending, and I was selecting matching and trying-on outfits for each event. Could you imagine I only went to buy a work pants and end up spending hundreds.
But I found some nice stuff in Forever21. I think this carnival I will be wearing alot of dresses, and will be saving the Jeans for UWI and Insomnia(if I go).
But all in all I basically have a theme for each of my outfits. OMG and I forgot to mention the shoes....I am a shoe addict. This carnival season I will be wearing most shoes by Chinese Laundry and BCBGirls they are the most comfortable shoes(esp for a fete).

marcus i live trini, i jus wanted to fyne out if my foreign friends can book their tickets for themseleves because not every fete they are interested in I am. Plus i usually am very busy with the gym, work and other committments.

i try not to study how much money i spend around carnival time....LOL!! From early i had a set of fetes i wanted to go but I ended up goin more this year. This was the first year i ever went Bishop's...GOOD FETE, if u never went, u should try goin next year, it was really good. After last year i had enough of Insomnia, so i decided to try something new this year, most of my friends went Dawn but i went Sunny Side Up with my boyfriend. Didn't know what to expect but i ended up havin a ball....even had a water hose and ting like Insomnia and the food was good.Amnesia, wicked in white, girl power, bazodee fridays...those r some fetes that i always go too.

Sweettrini, if yuh looking for a smaller fete on the Carnival Friday consider the Blue Range Cooler Fete. They stopped it years ago and had a 8yrs layoff, but Red Ants together with Blue Range brought it back this year and it was great, like the old days before that fete got over popular.

Last year was about 1500 people, this i'm sure it will grow but the venue can only hold like 2500, So you it never gets up to the level of those larger fetes of 4000-6000.

I always believe that most fete has a lifecycle, the first couple years, nice size, good service, and real vibe. After that word spreads, everyone start rushing the tickets so price gone up (supply & demand) the party ram, service suffers and vibe not there. The popularity of the fete creates real hype and high expectation and in the end people pay high prices and get disappointed. So look for the fetes that are on the up swing and not the fetes that are just hype.

I went Bliss last year and that fete was value for money. Food galore, shrimp, caviar, escargo you name it it was there. That's a must on my list this year.

Anonymous said...

I have gone to Amnesia for the last 3yrs and I've had a blast at the 1st two. Something was missing this year and after paying $500 for a ticket (I didn't get it early) I wasn't very impressed. I can easily see Amnesia hitting the $600 mark. The excuse would be that imported liquor gone up by 30%. I think Island People will be getting a break this year. I'm looking fwd to heading to Soca in Moka, BPTT, Beach House and Vale Breakfast Party.

When last did the cumulative price of fetes equal the cost of your costume. PRESSUAH!!!!

Anon 1:52, I agree with you somewhat...Toronto clothing selection kinda limited for real...there are still some places that you can go to for great wear, it just can't be one of those big stores like Fairweather..=/

but just take a drive over the border, you'll be in clothing heaven!

Anonymous said...

Totally unrelated (sorta)..but can someone PLEASE give me the # for Island People's mas camp? Thanks!

Saucy, I love you! This is great. Maybe you should (perhaps when the fete calendar is released) highlight fetes individually and have everyone give their ratings/comments on the fetes.

hey saucy

i know this is totally off topic..but im may be staying in st.ann's for canival but im wondering if thats close to all the carnival action??? i dont want to be far from everything

would i need transportation to get to and from the fetes??

saucydiva said...

'rah great idea,we can do a poll of sorts on the fetes.

anon St. Ann's is a great locaiton, you can walk to Girl Power (held at Queen's Hall) and V.I.P. Friday in Normandie,Hilton you can even walk to the Savannah but I only recommended walking during the day :D

You would need transport to get to/from the fetes since alot of them are held in and around Port of Spain which is close to St. Ann's but not walking distance. But even if you call a taxi service since you are within Port of Spain the rates should not be too bad.

Lord like the fete and dem start. I find this so funny. For the 8 days I was there last year, the kinda money I spend on fetes was ridiculous. BUT WORTH IT!!NO DOUBT!

And on the point of parties - it real gone up a notch or 2 since back in the day, money and the fashion scene just like you say there saucy. my my I done know what I hadda do.
And fellow UK residers -
Boxing day sales..Hello?
I'll be in Florida but I have my list ready to go, and I bought a pair of shoes there the other day Hush Puppy wedges - cute, black, comfortable and all purpose, that getting Kill! I don't care bout the shoes so much

I used this place to plan all my business this year from over here. got my friends to buy tickets and get invis etc.

And I'm a Bishop gyal myself all hail warrior like me.
and a Old Vale girl too don't get tie up. That breakfast party used to fit in the garage. But like I see on Trinijunglejuice is a proper fete now. How I miss de Vale. That is the first breakfast party I ever know bout. I grow up hearing that music in the morning.

The one bad thing about Big Fete's down Carange side on Carnival Sat, or anything big thing down there is the endless TRAFFIC. It took my 2 hours to get to INSOMNIA. And Let me don't even start on the kinda road rage I had trying to get out of there the next morning, even though we left before the party done. steeuppppse.

You have any advice on that one Saucy?? If not Insomnia where else to go Carni Sat that will have good big bands? that could match Insomnia?

Poll is a very good idea to whoever suggested it. Carnival Fri and Sat, Carnival Sunday which are the best fetes? there's lots of new ones, and some of the old ones buss or get over take by the.. ahmmm... yuh know what I mean!

If I get any inside info on Bliss I'll pass it on.

icahwait Dawn is the alternative to Insomina and it is thrown by Island People too if I am not mistaken. And thanks for the fete list ah posting it now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Icahwait* said...

Yes but was it as good though? That was a new one for this year wasn't it? it is IP. Think they had Bunji down there but that was probably as good as it got??

Insomnia had Machel, Alison Hinds, Imij & co, Roy Cape. Now I like Bunji, but when I paying my money I wanna know bunji and who else?
I not ruling anything out but I'll see who they have townside. It'll definately be easier getting to and fro

Trini Posse is supposed to be good too, but also 'down there'.

saucydiva said...

Dawn is somewhat new, the first year they had it was in 2005.This year they had performances by KMC with band Red, White & Black,Bunji, Faye Ann Lyons & Asylum,Shurwayne Winchester,Candy Hoyte & band Traffik,Kes The Band,Vision, Jamesy P, Nadia Batson, 3 Suns, Surge and Mista Vybe

I have had my fill of Insomnia, I was there for the very first Insomnia ever! And the last time I went was the first time they had a VIP section as well.....that was in 2002 I believe. The traffic problem is really unbearable, usually I get there very early but getting home is still a mess.

Trini Posse is ok, it used to be much better when Machel performed at the Oval. I don't like Bowen Marine as a location. The thing is alot of people leave TP early to go to Insomnia and the fete just gets sparse early, early..steups.

icahwait* Non Nobis Domine girl!! (I still remember the words to all the verses!! damn)

Anyhoo, on the party note, a girlfriend of mine started throwing an all-inclusive last year, this year was the second year. Its called SMILE and its Carnival Friday. Unfotunately I could not make it this year, but last year it was good. It's up and coming, so you guys can consider it for next year.
Wait but before I go advertising, let me be sure she having it eh. I'll get back to y'all on that one :S

Y'all have me thinking bout what I going to be wearing to these parties.....it too early!!!!!

Warrior...went to Smile (ah think) that was held around by de oval right in this resturant I forget the name (Olives ah tink) anyways Smile was a nice lime ...older crowd (meaning late 30's early 40's saw some 50yr olds in there too) but still Slaughter, Maximus Dan, Treason perfom etc and it was an intimate setting. That was the first time I realize that Maximus Dan can actually sing (go figure)lol I would add it to my Carnival lime calendar since it is a nice fete to chill out and not get trampled.

Went to Vale Breakfast Party too..now dat was ah NICE NICE Time my boys an dem pose up on the wall and well get on bad..boy ah fete so much when de fete done ah had to get carry out fuss meh foot was hurtin meh...ah hopin to get in dat again this year.

BeachHouse fete was awesome! The location took my breath away..I really doh go for de food and ting eh but ah find for the money ah paid it could be better lol Destra was a nice treat and the people that won the winnin contest lol Lard Fadder.

I remember that bacchanal with Machel and Alternative Contraceptive in 2005. I leave home before 8 p.m. to beat traffic and 1 a.m. I now reach Glenco. Traffic like dirt and the police had a brilliant plan to have roadblock that same night. Pressuh!
