- Costume- You should be registered for a costume at this time, however if you are still looking for a costume there are a few spaces left in most bands. If you are looking for a costume in a section that is already sold out, call the mas camp and asked to be put on a waiting list or keep checking Carnival Junction and in the case of Harts the Notice Board on their website.
- Ticket – At this point airfare is exorbitant, so if you are one of those stickers who did not get their ticket early keep looking out for deals on kayak.com or sidestep.com. I have heard a few stories of people still getting flights under $800.00US so it is possible. In case you did not know flights to Trinidad from most major U.S. gateways are over $1000.00US.
- Accommodation- I repeat what I said about the tickets; if you are not staying with friends or family it is time to get your accommodation sorted out NOW. Unfortunately most places are booked solid, however, try www.visitTnT.com for a list of accommodation options and try your luck.
- Footwear – A matter of importance for some a necessity that can be filled with plain sneakers for others. If you are of the former temperament you should have had some idea by now if you want boots or sneakers. Ideally you should have the footwear by now, especially if it is something new so you can give it ample time to break in.Try my favourite online shoe store to help your quest for shoes Zappos.com.
- Makeup – If you plan on using a professional makeup artist book now. Most of them will only a few two clients on the morning of Carnival, and you will be surprised how fast they are booked.
- Hair- This is the time to start looking for a hair stylist if you are looking at getting braids or extensions done. As with the makeup artist these stylists are usually inundated with appointments and in between fetes and other Carnival related events you have to find a time to get your hair done.
- Fete Tickets – This is a somewhat tough one for the overseas masqueraders, I mean the Vale Breakfast Party tickets were on sale from Boxing Day and unless you have a contact in Trinidad it is virtually impossible to score a ticket in February. Therefore this is the time to plan, plan, and plan. Check the events calendar and make a note of all the fetes you would like to attend and keep checking the “events” section of www.triniscene.com. Usually they post the fete flyers and on those flyers are names of committee members who you can call for tickets. Now this is where the planning part comes in, you would need a trusted local contact to get your money to and who can purchase tickets for you. I hesitate to recommend purchasing your tickets online since there are too many varying reports on tickets being marked up more than the original price, not being delivered and of people being scammed. I think the safest bet would be to have someone locally get your tickets for you.
- Accessories – Items like mas stockings, body jewelry, ear-rings and even makeup and glitter can be reserved for purchase until a week or two before Carnival. Most stores, if you are shopping locally, will not display their Carnival goodies until then anyway. You can even get accessories at the mas camp when you go to collect your costume.
- Monday Wear - For those fortunate enough to be getting Monday wear provided by your band or plan on wearing your costume on Monday ignore this post. For those who are thinking of not using their costume and are not getting Monday wear from the band or section, time to start planning what to wear. Usually I leave Monday wear until the very last because I just wear boy shorts and a tank top. However if you are thinking of getting something a little different start looking at options and getting ideas now. If you are in Trinidad take a little trip to Samaroos to see if they have what you are looking for, if not you can also get it online. It is not too late to get items delivered via your sky box for Carnival.
- Diet and Exercise - This is the time to adapt your eating habits, cutting out the snacks, sodas and fast food. I know there are some of you blessed with the genetics of a slender frame and the ability to not put on weight no matter what you eat, however the majority of women do need to pay attention to their diet, especially those past 30 as loosing weight is even harder! As posted before, it is not too late, there are still 5 weeks until Carnival so do not give up hope and do nothing at all. No miracles are going to happen within that time frame but you can get more toned, loose some weight and build stamina with proper diet and exercise.
So far I have made all my appointments; I am planning on getting makeup professionally done for the first time, and when I called the makeup artist she was already booked with one client and luckily I was able to get the remaining spot as she is only taking two customers on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Also, I have booked my lashes appointment for Carnival Saturday.
My hair appointment is also already made, I took the decision to have braids done early and get it touched up before Carnival. My boots are ready and paid for (I even tried them on but I am collecting them next week) so footwear is taken care of.
Actually the only thing I have left to do is get my accessories and organise my Monday wear which is giving me a headache at this point since I may have to change my original plans and design an outfit for me and my "girls".
I hope everyone else is getting ready don't say you were not guided, remember preparation is key!

saucy, for your lashes appointment, has this person done it for you before or have you seen it one someone who went to her? just trying to get a sense of how it came out...
Actually she has never done it for me before, however she came very highly recommended. She is also the same person doing my makeup.
nuff said! i'll call her and see if i could get a squeeze in for lashes - thanks!
saucy girl, ah ain't stick - LOL! i in like flynn for my lashes appointment!
saucy, what is the website for reserving your tickets again?
anon 9:47 there is a bit too much controversy regarding the website for fete tix so I hesitate to recommend them. Like I said in my post, the best way to get your tix is through a local contact or committee member!
Saucy,
I'm in Atlanta and need some mas stockings bad! In a previous post you mentioned two places (I think) where you can get stockings. Can you post that information again?
Thanks...
Hanes sheer to waist stockings worked just fine for me last year...gotem at WalMart in my shade, and they lasted until the evening without runs!
Thanks, I'll try them. Just didn't bother because I wanted something i know would work. Now I have proof
Saucy gyul! I am looking to get my makeup done professionally too, any sugestions please, especially since I am over seas. Appreciate it hun. BDW I love Zappos too, dem does have a wide selection of shoes.
anon 12:34 & 2:11, i too use hanes sheer to waist stockings and they really last!!
Another Hanes sheer to the waist fan!!
Also, Dress Barn Stores in the states have nice stocking too.
The stores in Trinidad are Mickels and Samaroos.
trini by injection I have a few suggestions for makeup; you can send me an email and I will give you the number of one of the girls I have used before or you can do a search in my archives for the post I did on makeup.
Saucy,
Did u wear monday wear when u played in harts? This is the first year i want to wear a tank top (exact color of the costume) and my costume bottom for monday. Most ppl in harts don't wear monday wear, and i don't want to stick out...what do you think?
anon I played on Monday once with Harts, and wore boy shorts with the bra top. Yeah, most people in Harts wear their costume.
After that I never played Monday again until Poison, I used to play j'ouvert instead.I think I wrote about that before.
Wear whatever you choose even if you stand out,it's about what makes you comfortable.
Phew!, ya know, I was tellin Hubby back in the fall Carnival is like your wedding day for some Trini gyrls!! After finding the perfect costume, (just like the gown) there's still so much more, hair & makeup and nails done by pros, the right shoes, accessories, & there's even fetes (like a bachelorette, shower, stag & do, rehearsal dinner) leading up to the big day!
In comparison to what I know, Caribana, there's so much hype & $$$$$.
Yes Karabana, it's like a wedding without having to feed the guests lol.
Karabana, interesting analogy ; ) I would like to run away with my girl to Trinidad and have a Carnival wedding...:D
Yuh know, but you also said something that intrigued me too. "In comparison to what I know, Caribana, there's so much hype & $$$$$". I read some of your comments about $$$$$, what is the hype you are seeing? I am quite curious about your perspective.
Dougs - That is exactly what I would like to do - HAVE A CARNIVAL WEDDING - everyone who knows me know that is what I want - especially the SO. I didn't think that other ppl have the same thought and Karabana is right planning for carnival is like planning a wedding...Let me go and tell the SO...he might just run away...LOL
;-) Saucyd!
Oh yeah, I forget, you missed :( all the yakking about prices & hype here Doug... I think just the fact that there's Carnival blogs is hype! (Bc there's no Caribana blogs {yet! ;-)}) Caribana doesn't have near the hype that I've discovered Carnival has. 'Course, it's the thing for T'dad, whereas although Caribana is labeled as N. America's largest carnival, interestingly, it is not such a big deal in TO.
It would be good to hear from anyone else out there re Caribana (it's kinda funny that I'm the only one who talks about it, well, next to Hubby ;-))
As far as $$$$, well, Carnival prices blow my Canadian mind eh, bc our most expensive fetes are $40! & the most expensive costume is $135!
So it's been quite fascinating, educational & funny for me to learn all I have about the culture of Carnival.
PS: LOVE the idea of a Carnival wedding!!!!:-)!!!!
...Met at Carnival, proposed at Carnival, wedding at Carnival, & for those who are inclined, Carnival baby...
That's true Carnival devotion!!!!! I wonder how many of those actual real stories there are...
Man a Carnival wedding would be awesome!
The reception would be like an all-inclusive fete, complete with the electronic ticket and getting swiped as you enter.
The venue would be Pier 1 or Mobs 2 with a food court, stage for live band and a entire desert section with chocolate fountain!
Menu will have staple all-inclusive items like bake and shark, doubles, corn soup on additon to Chinese, Creole and Indian dishes.
The live band has to be someone real hot,Machel Montano would be the icing on the cake, but a small band could do.. maybe Kees.
Guests get decorated masks as favors and the servers at the party all wear Carnival costumes...LOL
Of course Mc Farlane would do the decor, 3 Canal would sing at the church and the bride's dress has to be something fabulous...and over the top.
"...it's been quite fascinating, educational & funny for me to learn all I have about the culture of Carnival."
Karabana, it is cool that you said this, b/c many people don't realize that Trinidad Carnival is NOT JUST a big street party with costumes. I have been to several "children" of the mother, which include Brooklyn's, Miami's, London's, and Toronto's. All provide a pretty good "taste," but cannot come close to the full sumptuous palette that is experienced only in Trinidad.
From what you wrote, I think this WILL BE your first time in Trinidad. I do sincerely hope yours and hubby's experiences will exceed all the amazing positive things said that have propelled your eagerness to want to "really" experience this Carnival ting. I'll look forward to your post Carnival impressions.
Now this thing about "hype," I do get your meaning. You are saying hype in the sense of an "organic built up momentum" as we move toward Carnival weekend. So indeed there is quite a bit of hype to Carnival.
I wrongly thought that you were referring to hype as contrived almost deceptive promotion. And we do know that does occur, as well. But just people trying to push this or that aspect to make some profit. For me, Trinidad's Carnival does not need that kind of hype. It speaks for itself when people "culturize" (cultivate) themselves in it (yes, I agree with critics, we do need to keep evolving for more comfortable conveniences, without losing the heart and soul of the arts...and so it shall be, with our passionate patronage ; ) )
I am look forward to meet and talk with you both at the bloggers lime. :D
Yeah, I love the notion of a Carnival wedding.
Ay! Saucy, doh forget to invite me to da wedding eh. Ah go bring meh camera (I want to take a picture of da chocolate fountain). Yuh, like ting eh...LoL. That wedding will be a fantasy spectacular :D
By the way, I absolutely love and appreciate 3 Canal very much. Carnival, last year I went to see their show "Vibes it Up" at the Little Carib Theatre, TWICE!!!
Oops.
...we do need to keep... s/b ...Carnival needs to keep...
No, WILL NOT ;-) be my 1st time in T'dad Doug. Been a few x, my Dad's Trini. Hubby's Trini. 1st time for me to Carnival however (Hubby has played a few x's), & I've said before I've had 7 yrs of preparing w Caribana ;-).
Hype can sometimes be a negative thing, but mostly I've found all aspects of Carnival to be positive.
