Still looking for footwear?

Ok so all those who missed out on boots by Natalie since she closed orders in early January, I really have no sympathy for you guys. I mean I told you since last year where to go and get your footwear organised. However, I know that desperation would be setting in by now and in reality I do care about your footwear looking up to mark and on point hence the reason I found myself "behind the bridge" at Piccadilly, East Dry River in Port of Spain hunting down mas boots one Sunday evening.

It was there I found "Jomo's Leather Shop", a tiny establishment run my Lorna and her husband Jomo. This is the place to go if you need boots cheap and you need boots fast! Surprisingly, given the location, they have lots of orders for boots which come in a variety of colours such as white, red, silver, bronze and gold. The basic 12 inch boots are $130.00TT while the 16 inch boots are $200.00TT. These boots are flat with a small heel.

Special orders such as wedges, high stack heels, platforms and even fabric covering can be accommodated but these orders MUST be placed early. Regular boots can be ordered and collected within a few days. If you wish they can even decorate the boots for you, but the choice is also yours to decorate yourself.

The booth number is 26 and Lorna or Jomo can be contacted at 797-7594.

Please note that the area where the booth is located is notorious for crime even though a police station is a stone's throw away; if you are interested in getting boots there go early and go with a friend. One of my friends told me a co-worker of hers got her boots from there and had no problems at all, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Lastly, this little booth is nothing like Natalie's shop; there is no air-conditioning, black tiled floor or linx machine; this is just a very, very humble leather shop with mas boots for sale. If you are accustomed to the aforementioned creature comforts it is best you seek some other alternative footwear.

Saucy that was really good of you to give them a plug cause that strip mall behind there has been around forever and I know that they dont get much people traffic passing through.

I think a lot of people are scared of the area at first. But seems like they are doing good business and yes, I have seen that sign there for ages.

Sauce, you are truly a jewel.

That's some real tough love for us delinquents Saucy! =) I only got around to sitting down with Natalie's diagram of a foot and a measuring tape around new year's so I'm still waiting with fingers crossed to hear whether she managed to squeeze me into her work schedule! Otherwise I'll be joining Buublenut and the others stranded abroad in the lastminute quest for the next-best-thing-to-perfect mas shoes!

Hey Saucy, I saw and actually tried on my co-workers boots, and they don't seem bad at all, and for a really good price too!!!
The material of the boot is soft, and the insides seem comfortable (I am sure Dr. Scholl's would make them VERY cpmfortable!!!), and they zip up the sides.
I think for one time use only, tehy seem a pretty good deal; it is if I can get the nerve to go down in the back there myself and order a pair!!!

Every year when we go home my mother does drag me too that strip mall. You cna find some nice little bargins in there.

Alot of those same shops take up residence around the savanah selling their leather goods around carnival, I even took a card from one of them and was supposed to go back to buy some slippers behind the bridge and never went even though i pass there every day to get on the highway. Leather slippers have really changed over the years though and i am sure these ppl making mas boots since saucy and my moms buying boots so they MUST be good.

I fraid to play in boots yes, my arches real high . I go stick to my little nike shox yes. I can't take that back pain! I always find they look really nice though. I think i'm a bit jealous

saucydiva said...

diva I have high arches as well; insoles do the trick. You can even use your sneaker insoles if they are most comfortable.

Nomad I have shoes :)

Saucy I returning my boots tonight and a pair of sneakers I order come in to the store today so I going to grab them tonight and take a photo and post it for you highly respected opinion :)

I sad I couldn't work the boots but its true with that heal - considering it made of word my feet would kill and I wouldn't be able to jump up properly all day.

saucydiva said...

good thinking buublenut; sneakers will be much more comfortable than that wooden heel.

Saucy thanks for the play however I am not sure this is good PR.

These are our brothers and sisters who are less priviliged.

Keep in mind some Carnival bands will be using this route for carnival 2007 and honestly IT will be safer here than Victoria Square, Dundonald St, and several other lighted areas

Your quote : Please note that the area where the booth is located is notorious for crime even though a police station is a stone's throw away; if you are interested in getting boots there go early and go with a friend.

anon I see your point but I do not want to be responsible for persons going there unawares on my suggestion and getting themselves in some sort of trouble (not saying that anything will happen).

To me it is better to be real about the situation and let people know they should have their wits about them than to omit that part. I am not saying that the vendors themselves are criminals but I have co-workers who live in the area and they themselves suggested that if persons are going there and are not from the area to go with friends and not go after dark.

I've seen this place so many times. Good plug saucy for those late-commers.
And I agree with you being real about the vicinity. It's just like living in Brooklyn or the Bronx, you should know your surroundings at all times.
No offence!

anon 2:05pm unfortunately we just do not have tha variety here that you find online. Try the puma store and the sports stores.

Saucy this is off the topic but I am so excitied I had to consult you. My girl and I just got into Spirit Warrior, if u remember way back i was going with IP but i couldnt deal with their ignorance, then i decided not to jump at all but now i am in TRIBE (i am smiling from ear to ear). So this calls for "Operation kill the fat". I have to do double time at the gym, cause i never see a fat indian yet lol. Can you let me know if tribe provides tops for monday on the road?

On "behind the bridge."

Unfortunately, a few bad apples do seem to spoil the whole bunch. The "high crime" area which has provided the notorious high crime rep (unfairly or not) for Trinidad is almost that entire hill (which include Morvant, and Laventille). Also, some of the "bad elements" are encroaching on Belmont (this is still my Carnival central where I get dressed for Tuesday, and to catch a nap after jouvert before I head to Diamond Vale to come back out after lunch, on Monday).

Saucy is quite right to make folks aware of the location. So, with the normal self protection awareness that bagogul pointed out, one could make their happy boots arrangements at jomo's. I have stopped for lunch with bands twice "behind the bridge" on Carnival Tuesday, incidence free, and the vast majority of "good" people/vendors were quite happy we "honored" them.

saucydiva said...

hey bajangal, welcome to the TRIBE my hubby is in that section!! You have the small, medium or large headpiece?

No tops for Monday girl, very sad, I know!

dougs one of the bloggers went and ordered her boots today accopmpanied by some guys from her office and said everything was cool.I don't mean to discourage people from going but just use common sense and everything will be fine.

Hi saucy what great timing with a post about boots, I actually came back from a guy today who is going to make my boots for my Raiders costume. His name is Frank Moore, the name of his business is Leathershack Cobblers Int'l and he's located at 13 Mc Donald Street, Woodbrook .(624-5328) (He does it from the back of his house.) He also does leather footwear/goods. He's VERY good,he's been doing this for the last 15 years or so.... The prices are aight to, from like 150 - 250. My boots for instance, is a (1) inch heel, made up of khaki leatherette with some gold trim and thats $200.00, which I think is good.... So what ever u want he's basically make if for you..... So anyone interested check him out...

renee, are the boots comfortable?? you think they might hurt your feet on mon and tues? also what height are they?

No Longer Annon said...

Yep..I went to check out the boots today..by Jomo..and it was not bad at all. And believe me, I am not the bravest person in the world!!!..I kept telling my guys to make sure and do their security wok!!!..lol..and these guys are not he most masculine guys either eh....

But the place seemed decent; I did not see any "badguys" hanging around, and mr. Jomo seemed very professional. He measured my foot, drew out my foot and told me that I could collect my boots next Wednesday.
You make a downpayment of whatever you can, and pay the balance when you collect the boots.
The boots are priced very reasonably; mine are costine $140, as I am taking silver boots and he is putting a little heel so that the boot will not be entirely flat.

I will still get the Dr. Scholl's insoles though!!

saucy i have the medium headpiece

I must say i look quite silly wearing them with no costume. can't wait to try on the full kit!

I got some glitter from Natalie for touch ups if I decide to wear the boots on Monday. That can be a plan.
