Inspiration or Imitation?

Inspiration comes from many places I guess.. ...but where is the line drawn between inspiration and imitation?

Belly Dance Costume 2004

Kaotic 2009

p.s. thanks for the very keen eyed blogger for the pics!

it doesn't really look like a copycat design...besides, the usage of beads in tha fashion is quite often.

It doesn't really matter if its a copycat or not they both butt ugly, so 1989 styling.

Maybe the same designer had input into both creations? Maybe? Just speculating, cause they lil too close for comfort...main difference that I'm seeing is the skirt and missing feathers, that's about it.

M unfortunately I cannot take credit for the photo...one of the BLOGGERS (as I stated) spotted the photo and sent it to me via email.

I am sure if the band in question was TRIBE no one would have a shortage of comments saying that there is an obvious similarity in both bras.

Please note that voicing an observation does not equal hate; hate takes too much time and effort when in reality (and personally) I don't put that amount of effort and energy into any band but the band I am playing in. That does not mean I cannot find humour with the others however, PLUS if I talk ONLY about TRIBE I get "hate"....

Isn't it funny? Dammed if you do.. dammed if you don't.

At the end of the day is my blog and I will talk about anything I feel like actually.. tomorrow's topic WILL be the weather. Thanks for the suggestion!!

i dont see the difference

i definitely see the similarities. from the obvious (the beading) to the more subtle (the shape of the bra). whomever designed this costume may have tried to hide their "inspiration" but indeed it looks more like an embellished imitation to me...

LOL Saucy, looking forward to the weather tomorrow :)

Hmmm...Funny you posted a photo of a belly dancing costume. I was just on E-bay last night looking at the belly dancing bra tops. Many are extremely close to bra tops of many, many bands for 2k9, with a wide array of colors....and I was thinking I could order one for my Monday wear. Seems like others may have the same idea too! Figure $29.95 + shipping may be ok!

It could have been Tribe, IP, D Krewe, Genesis...whoever..the band is not the point...its the topic...the RE hashing ...it can distinctly come across as "someone who has absolutely nothing to do but go back and nitpick at costumes that BEEN on the market months now"....Not saying specifically you...just in general.LOL...Anyways, I look forward to the weather as well tomorow Carnivalbaby...try to include a Brooklyn forecast too fuh me!

"rolls my eyes"..LOL.....so am I Carnivalbaby..so am I!

Nah man. I think it's fine. Similar bra, same bra, whatever. ALL bands have done some sort of copycat at one time or another. I felt one of the labour day costumes looked JUST like Black Magic and was told "no, the headpiece is tilted differently". Hahaha. Whatever. All the bands copy, its part of the mas.

I also felt it seemed a forced issue today though. If it was earlier in the game it might not have seemed so "spiteful" although I feel certain Sauce did not mean it that way.

Weather tommorrow boy? Weather report with the Sauce. I'm sure she's gonna put her own spin on it and make it interesting. Maybe about preparing to deal with the Carnival heat? hmmmm

Saucy aka "The Sauce" said...

Well it is a blog, not a magazine.. not the news.. a blog. I don't see the issue if I feel, today, to write about a costume from a few months ago when someone pointed out the similarity to me. I can't believe people are now having an issue with what I choose to comment on! lol. Am I now to abide by a schedule for topics?

chris said...

Aye Sauce,

I have no issue at all! I enjoy reading the blog no matter the topic! You know that! I was simply commenting that I understood where M was coming from. Yes, I said it seemed "forced", but I guess as readers and fans of the blog, we also have opinions on what we read. I like the fact that you write about whatever you feel to write about and you make no excuses for it! If you tried to please everyone, the blog would not be as popular as it is today. keep up the good work!

Saucy, I would have to disagree with the tone of this post. I think it's more a case of inspiration, more so than downright imitation, and actually favoured that costume from Kaotic a little.

I love the fact that this blog harbours different POV's. Nevertheless, M, I find your argument based on the "eleventeenth" hour to be just a tad slanted and flawed.
IMHO, part of the reason why the blog is around is to facilitate an excitement about Carnival perennially. If anyone one on the blog comes acorss an item that is questionnable, it should not matter that it was several months after the fact.

"This is a place to come and get a little carnival info (how ah buy it is how ah selling it)" Saucy, you need to put that in bold.

Inflammatory comments are SO yesteryear..too bad the economy is in such a quandry, else I would be able to afford more troll-spray trucks.

I guess I do see the similarities, but I do agree with the point that at some point in time, all bands copy. Its part of the artform I guess..whether they do so intentionally or not, the designers seem to get their inspiration from somewhere else. I'm sure if we were to nitpick on every single costume (in every single band), I'm pretty sure we would be able to find something similar lookin in some part of the world.I actually doh find the costume bad at all.

steupse **looks to the top of the blog** OH, look at that... its still SAUCY's blog! That means she can write WHATEVER she pleases, whether its about a costume for this year, last year, next year, or ten years ago. You don't like it, DON'T READ IT!

Sauce, I do see the similarities. Is it possible though that this is some kind of coincidence? Maybe unlikely, but still possible lol

S said...

Hmmm ... i don't even think it is an issue of inspiration or imitation for this costume. To me the major similarity is the way the beads are hung. And in that case, that is a pretty basic thing to do. It is very easy to come up with that 'style' all on your own. The ingenuity and creativity of a costume comes with how you put everything else together.

Are we going to then say that any costume with beads hanging straight down in front from the belt is a copycat. I agree that there are numerous copycat costumes out there, but just based on the scooping of the beads on this one, I would have to disagree. Could just actually and genuinely be a coincidence.

This happens in science too. Many people 'discover' or figure out things around the same time. That is why it is so competitive to work fast and publish first so you get the credit for it :-)

i think this is a real silly post and ah waste ah webspace lol swagged beads have been used on hundreds of costumes for years and will no doubt continue to be for years to come i for one dont see the similarity in design apart from the swagged beads??? and i have a keen eye for it! i think we could be hear till the cows come home pulling apart all bands including the "amazing" TRIBE AND IP for similarities in off the shelf costumes or inspiration for them.

Salsaman said...

Maybe we should stop designers from using Bras since they have been used before in other costumes. ALL female masqueraders must go bare breasted like in Rio! Men we also should not tolerate wearing board shorts either as this has been done before....LOL.....Seriously I really do not have a problem with this costume but everyone is free to voice their opinion. Saucy just pointed out an observation by another blogger so I would just agree to disagree with the notion that its anything near a copy.

Goddess said...

I originally came on here to say "I don't really see the similarity...other than the draping beads"

But I also have to say that I also don't see what M's point really is. At some point M you need to just dress back and sit the hell down and let things be... always needing to have the last word or make a comment? Not cool.
As horrible as you want to make this post out out to be, you managed to comment more times than anybody else... at various points throughout the day. Clearly Saucy and the ' blogger' are not the only ones with extra time on their hands!

Didn't expect to see so many comments.

When last I checked this is STILL 'Saucy's blog'. Thus choice of topic is hers, doh matter if it relevant to 2009, 2008, 2001, 1992 whenever!! Unless she's gone into syndication (and didn't mention it, which she is not obligated to if she did) she's doing this for free and more regularly than many many bloggers. Daily posts people!!
This is a gold mine of Carnival related info, treasure it!!! Doh spoil it.

Thank you Saucy... please keep up the posts despite the naysayers.
