Crop Over 2009 News

As Islandsista noted a few days ago Harbour Lights "Blue Box Cart" band launched on May 3rd and their facebook group is finally updated with some more photographs of the costumes though no additional information is given. Apparently this is one band that does not need marketing or promotion to sell out!

And you know that Crop Over band launch season is around the corner when Baje starts their model search:

By the looks of the models and the crowd alike, I guess they really do deserve their nickname, lol

i just despise how racially segregated CropOver is.Really and truly I thikn it's shameful, but to be fair it does reflect the Bajansociety. Harbor Lights is about 90% white people and judging by the models and promotions that's how they want it to stay. They love it!!! It's disgusting and I thank God that Trinidad isn't at that level.

2overtwelve -- sorry to tell you, but I've been to Trinidad Carnival, I've seen the rich white people doing the same thing in Harts.

And I've also EXPERIENCED the attitude of rich Indians in mixed bands who only move with themselves and don't even acknowledge the blacks in their section. So please save the lie about full integration, some of us actually know better.

Also, this article is only in reference to 1 Bajan band in paticular.

A new band has launched this year called Rebel, the owner is a white Bajan who has a mixed compliment of people. So there is no reason to blow Blue Box Cart out of proportions.

Anyway still, once the road hot, people does enjoy themselves.

You are very right about Harts. Save for a few sprinkles of the Trini rainbow, it is predominantly white band. And you know what you cannot stop who joins a band for whatever reason, except if through marketing and appearance. And although it's a small excpetion, and may not be sincere, Harts will still throw in a black model here and there, once or twice a chinese model etc. Harbour Lights does not even bother with that. Admittedly I'm probably ranting about the Bajan society itself, and although no island is without the racial prejudices some seem to thrive and survive on, I truly think Bajans are the worst. Not to mention Harts wasn't always like that, the Harts family that started the band were not white if I recall correctly. I truly believe HL was created for the sake of the anti-black white Bajan population. So the pictures just brought about uncontrolled internet anger. ps. I could never care less about the rich indians lol but that's a whole other topic isn't it?

2overtwelve -- no problem I understand what you mean. But trust me Bim is not as bad as any other island, we just have a bigger white population.

Also, not only white people does be in HL. It does serve a certain clientele in terms of music and drink prices and entrance restrictions. I've been (and I'm black) and had a good time. It's not really my thing. But even Xtreme, which is very popular with Black Bajans is owned by a white Bajan self and no one talks about that. So, even as much as rich white people (in any country) does move a way, your basic people does mix all the time and most people don't notice or comment.

Actually HL just has a niche market cosat the prices they used to charge back in the day, only certain ppl could afford to party in there all the time, and 30 years ago those certain ppl were white. Now that the middle class in Bim has a lil more spending power there is a more mixed crowd and some nights it even reaches a 70% - 30% ratio. Based on the music mostly, alot of black people just dont frequent the club.

That said, the owner of EXtreme is not white, he is Syrian..as id Rebel who just started nis new crop over band.

As it was said before, situation in Trinidad is the same when it comes to who jumps with wat band, it just isnt as noticable in TnT because of the very racially diversed and mixed population
