Normally registration for Harts starts the Monday immediately following the band launch, this year it was delayed by four days and seems like the anticipation or the fact that it is the 50th anniversary of the band brought out the crowds:

Never have I seen such a mob of people at Harts mas camp, all patiently waiting to register for their costumes.!
Prices are posted but the price for
American Indian/Mas Sweet Mas is not up as yet, masqueraders are being encouraged to make their down payment of $1000.00TT for that section if interested as it seems to be a very popular section. The website will be updated with prices by Monday.

Harts is opened for registration and I like what I see so far (in terms of prices). A lot of Harts’ backline costumes are well below the $600 USD mark but I have seen one frontline so far that reached $900+ US but guess what….The large head piece for my number one pick in this band is not just huge but GIGANTIC and the costume comes with Isis Wings. So this is why I am impressed with Harts’ pricing.
1. The male costumes are significantly cheaper than the female costumes and far cheaper than the other two bands that I was considering (Spice and Tribe).
2. In addition, the male costumes in Harts actually look like a costume which is more than I can say for the other bands.
3. The female small headpiece option (backline) prices are affordable (relatively) and the actual head pieces that come with the costumes are not skimpy at all in terms of material and they vary from section to section. Let’s just say the selection is diverse.
4. The (frontline) larger headpiece option is overloaded with feather and/or design and character.
5. Finally, not all the sections are equally priced which tells me that Harts did not rely on the “we must sell out” mentality that I would boldly (perhaps wrongfully) say that other bands tend to do to make their profit. Consumers, costumer, masqueraders were taken into account (IMO). I think that as a designer if you know that it did not take much material to make your costume then you owe it to your costumer to price them fairly (fair market price i.e.).
Now some may argue that Harts is not an all inclusive band but this is how I look at it. The difference in price between this band (say backline) and the other two bands I considered is about $150US. There is no way in hell that I will be drinking or eating $150 USD worth of food and beverage in two days. So all things constant great service, security, trucks, DJ, jumping up alongside a celebrity, fun on the road, cost of feathers, beads and artistic talent….what am I really paying for in these other bands that justifies this difference in cost? But it is a business. However, for some reason I naively looked at art as one of those “businesses” that you go into not just for the money but for the love of it.
Now everyone has their own reasons for choosing a band and costume where different factors are weighed accordingly and I say to each his own. I not gonna hate on anyone for theirs. But since cost was a major factor in my decision I am really glad I held out. Now mind you I eh pay down on no costume yet and if you see me in Spice next year doh call me no hypocrite it just means that I reevaluated my priorities and other items became more important or perhaps it’s just my fickle nature. But at least I know I am justified in thinking that some of these costumes are way overpriced and not for reasons of inflation, raw materials or superb service as I was initially led to believe.
How does this band work in terms of pricing? ie, do they have drinks/ food etc that you pay extra for?
We're coming over from the UK and weighing up our options....
Harts is not an all inclusive band, so there is an additional cost for any extras, including the wee-wee truck and drinks/food carts,
The cost of the wee-wee truck is about TT$100 for both days. And you can purchase the wristband when you collect your costume.
As for the carts, there are about 12-15 privately operated carts in the band. They range in price depending on amenities, but I would say the cheapest of them is probably around TT$400 per person for both days. Since they are private, it may be difficult for a newcomer to join one, since membership depends on whether you can track down the person who runs the cart.
Harts also runs their own cart, which provides lunch and drinks on both days. You can reserve spaces in the cart (and get a rough idea of the pricing) when you make your costume deposit, and you pay for the wristbands when you collect your costume.
Bear in mind that you can only get drinks/food from the cart you joined, so to avoid confusion on the road, be sure to ask how you can identify your cart (some have silly names, some have distinctive decorations, etc) when you pay.
Here's a link to a Facebook group for a private cart committee this year. I'm not sure that this group will be hosting a cart next year, but the info on the page will give you an idea of the types of amenities/refreshments provided by the private carts.

Hope that helps. Have fun in whichever band you choose.
