The Ministry of Tourism has posted on YOUTUBE videos of Ole Time Carnival in Trinidad, the year 1959. This reminds me of last year's Vintage Tuesdays series on the blog and I hope you enjoy stepping back in time to see how much things have changed, and how much they remain the same!

This is FANTASTIC!
In part two, at 4:33 mins, the lady in the gold cone bra is GREAT! Must have been a bit scandlous back in the day... like the wire bra up to a few years ago.
Thanks Saucy!
Vin tage!
Yes, Chris. Her coke bottle shape and her costume is not too far off from 2009. She must have had a crystal ball ;)
There is one element (I am not saying) of a particular band in the clips that I would like to revive in a seminal band I wish I could (will, maybe) produce. I don't see it in current bands, but it has always been an element (particularly crossing "stage.") for a band I envision.
Notice how many older women played (I suppose Carnival became WOMAN in the late 50's.) And, notice the strong Chinese support (people in the bands, not just spectators or sponsors) of the era.
Great footage. I'm willing to bet that Peter Minshall was inspired by the re-enactment of historical and current events in carnival at that time. It's not new, this just shows us that mas and street theater were always part of our cultural history.
Loved it!
