With so many bands to choose from, new and old, some of you have been asking my opinions on the alternatives to the popular bands such as TRIBE.
Since my experience has only been with Harts and TRIBE (of the bands still in existence) I decided to compile all the reviews sent in post Carnival 2010 so that you can read and form your own opinion, hopefully this helps in the decision making process. If I do not have a review of a particular band that means one was not sent in.
You can also check out my post "Blogging the Carnival Experience" for personal reviews of Carnival 2010 as well as Afro Chic, Wining Criminals, Haitian Queen and Carnival Addicts.

This is a very informative post... The only issue is the Mas Jumbies (jouvert) review... I read all three, and they were overwhelmingly positive... I was there, with 5 friends, and we would all have to agree that the experience was a negative one. The reviews were so glowing, that I really have to believe an 'inside job' of sorts... In my opinion, Mas Jumbies is one to stay away from--for sure!
Why, Femzilla? please share your experience. I'm looking for a J'ouvert band for 2k11 and as an overseas non-Trini, I'll take all the advice I can get to help me form a FAIR opinion of the options available
Femzilla, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I played in mas jumbies this (even designed me and my friends "frontline" costume). I had an absolutely wonderful time.
Mas jumbies is not for everyone. I had a true jouvert carnival experience with them. I am not into all of the mud and raunchiness that goes on in some on the t-shirts bands.
If you want to play mas and have a true jouvert experience then play with mas jumbies, but if you want to play in mud and get on wild and crazzy this is not the band for you.
what i DON'T want is what happens every time we do J'ouvert in Jamaica...people tek the paint and freeness vibe and go overboard and get crazy...I've seen women held down by groups of men (presumably their "friends" ?) while someone POURED paint onto every inch of skin and IN every orifice they can think of...we have no sense of the culture of the experience, the significance of the "jab-jab" is lost on us, it's just an excuse for normally repressed people to go nuts...J'ouvert ent therapy.
I'm looking for a good lyme, where I can feel safe and get a sense of why J'ouvert is played.
I met Cocoa Devils on the road in 2006 and did the walk from like 3am to 9am, and that was WONDERFUL....don't ask me where we went (I don't know POS) but the lyme was easy-chipping and great music and we were getting on bad in St James when the sun was shining brightly...so I kind of have a sense of how that one goes
how do i find out and register with J'ouvert bands?
I have never played with Mas Jumbies. I think the post is a welcomed avenue for those looking for feedback from the masses.
Femzilla, I think that, in you trying to achieve some sort of balance between positive and negative reviews for Mas Jumbies, you sound acutely ridulous.
Is that not the point of a review? How could you say that, because a particular band has raving or overwhelmingly positive reviews about the experience that they offer, the reviewers must be biased or an "inside job"?
Maybe, just maybe, Mas Jumbies actually deliver on their experience. I dunno, just a thought lol.
Isn't it positive reviews that have built brands such as TRIBE to receive the demand that they have accrued to date?
If you have a negative view, then speak on it, because it is just as informative and useful to newbies who are looking for public guidance on what they choose. (The objective) you run a risk of tainting your own review with such accusatory and inflammatory statements likened to those you have posted.
I too have to agree with the last poster, Femzilla's comments make no sense whatsoever. She sounds rather like a rival band wanting to discredit an upcoming one. If she had an issue why wait until now to vent (6 months later)? She had 3 reviews in which to do so. We are told no details that prevents her from playing? I personally played with then this year and had a great time, they are a small band and not overgrown and rowdy like the others. Perhaps it is just personal preference, some like that and others don't. So Femzilla befre you go casting your dirty water on people's good reputation, but some credance to it. And to the Jouvay newbie who was enquiring, if you don't like the wildness, this band is a good choice. I came out of Mudders and found masjumbies to be all I wanted and more. I will be with then again in 2011, and I don't know anyone of them so this aint an "inside job".
